Village Power Community Development Projects is an organization that focuses on rural development, self-empowerment and gender equity.
Village Power supports several creches in the Magaliesburg area. One of these, the Masakhane creche project has been operational since May 2009. Apart from supporting the Masakhane Creche project, this organisation also supports the feeding scheme at a primary school in the Magaliesburg area where children from resource poor backgrounds receive two meals a day.
The Masakhane Creche has been operating for 4 and half years now. Approximately 16 - 20 children attend the creche from 08h00 until 14h00 and children get two meals a day and a small snack at mid morning. Food costs R 600 per month. A vegetable garden, tended by the community, supplies the creche with vegetables.
The creche used to have four volunteer teachers who all received a stipend from a large corporate donor funder. At the moment, because of a dire lack of funding the creche has only one teacher, Maria Selebogo, who is getting R 500 as stipend per month. Maria is very motivated to help the creche survive and recently carried on working without any stipend for 6 months. Maria takes her role as caregiver and teacher very seriously, but has indicated that, as a single mother, she is finding it very hard to continue working at her current stipend of R 500 per month.
This creche was the subject of a Master's thesis and under normal conditions (when more teachers are involved), operates according to a basic programme, which includes indoor creative activities, gross-motor skill development, free play and story time. Children also get introduced to books, basic numbers and counting as well as fine-motor and creative development. At the moment Maria is taking care of all the children, ranging between the ages of one and six years old.
This creche has recently been registered with the department of Social Development. However, government funding will only be available for this site in May of next year. It is important that this creche survives until then. Once-off donations of any amount, debit orders dedicated for the next 8 months or donations of food items will be appreciated.
